I needed portable durability with large storage space and great speeds. I bought this drive because I was looking for something to replace my dated 2TB USB 3 external drive. Overall, this is a smooth running, high capacity storage drive that is easy to use and should provide years of service. I’ve experienced a lot of disk crashes, and over time, I’ve found that WD drives have been more reliable and less prone to crashing than other brands that I have tried. Basically, before plugging it in, make sure it is in a safe, secure place where it won’t be knocked or dropped. Since it is an active drive with moving disks, you do need to treat it with care, protecting it from bumps and drops, especially when running. This drive has the smallest form factor that I have seen for an external 4 Tb drive, making it easier to carry around and store. The disk runs at 5400 rpm, slow for a disk that you use for constant data storage and retrieval, but acceptable for backup storage. It has a transfer speed of 5 Gbps when using a USB 3 connection. As a photographer, I need high capacity back-up drives, and I regularly fill big ones like this 4 Tb drive. The product comes backed with a 3 year warranty.

You also have the option of not installing the WD Discovery software if you don’t need it. WD recommends this drive for Windows 10, 8.1, or 7 (they have a Mac version for Macs, although it is possible to set this drive to use on Macs as well).

The WD Discovery software allows you to set up auto backup options, password protection, import cloud images and documents for Facebook, Instragra, Dropbox, OneDrive, GoogleDrive, etc. The drive is an active hard drive (not SSD), powered through the USB cable no additional power cable is required. It comes formatted and ready to use and pre-loaded with WD Discovery software for Windows or Mac. It comes with a 15” USB C to USB C data/power cable as well as a USB C to USB 3 A adapter. This is a high capacity external hard drive. I'll post any updates if I encounter any problems down the line. If I run out of storage again, this will be my go-to.

Another pro about this external hard drive is that it is compatible with MacOS (a feature I noticed other products didn't tend to have for some reason-mine is currently running on 10.12 Sierra).
The size is no bigger than my iPhone, and I've noticed no damage from the few drops it has endured since purchase (about 5, 3 foot drops over the past 4 months). One of the main reasons I got the rugged mini was because I am a college student and I knew I would be carrying this around often. I've read reviews saying back ups were lost, but I have had no issues with crashing or loss of data. It runs very smoothly, backs up my computer quickly, and has the space for all of my school work, imported footage, edited footage, and final projects. Other than SD cards and limited space USB drives, this is my first real external storage device, and I couldn't be happier. I've been using it for about 4 months now with absolutely no problems. My biggest worry was losing all of my essays, photographs, and short films, so I purchased the 1TB LaCie Rugged Mini. Importing footage used to be a nightmare, and I was constantly deleting apps for space. I rely heavily on my computer for online school as well as photography/filmmaking.
I originally bought the LaCie hard drive because my MacBook was running out of storage.
